CALL TO ACTION: Black Community Collective

To our Black Community and Allies in Manitoba

First, we hope you are keeping well, finding support in each other, and taking care of yourselves, your families, and friends as best as possible. We understand that these are difficult times and we are here in solidarity and with the intention to ensure that we all have access to the necessary resources that support our community’s positive mental, social, and economic health.

This is why we are reaching out to you to work as a collective to bring to Manitoba the systemic and social changes that we need to see. We are calling on individuals and organizations within the Black community to take up this call to action to get involved in a new Black Community Collective initiative that will work towards implementing new programs, projects, and initiatives in the community across industries that will strengthen and enhance the Black presence in Manitoba.

The Black Community Collective will focus on three key areas each for development:

Policing:

  • Supporting police body cams to increase transparency and public safety.
  • Fund re-allocation to financially support community efforts and programs on crime prevention, conflict resolution, and restorative justice.
  • Use of force – retraining personnel regarding resolution and de-escalation.
  • Anti-Racism Training for all employees of the Winnipeg Police Service (WPS).
  • Whistle-blower Program implementation to ensure that the WPS has an avenue to report internally.

Government:

  • Sustainable funding from all levels of government (Civic, Provincial, Federal) to support Black-led Black serving organizations.
  • Representation on public boards and commissions in the form of individuals that can speak to community issues, bring that information back to the community and assist with implementing new programs and initiatives.
  • Employment Equity policies are put in place in all sectors that are transparent and developed in partnership with Black-led organizations. Diversity in the leadership in all sectors reflects the community we serve.

Community Engagement:

  • Education – amending school curriculum to include Black history with input and support from Black-led organizations.
  • Culturally-specific programming, safe spaces, access to mental health services, and workshops that engage the broader Black community and provide necessary supports.
  • Community input, consultation, and involvement in all new initiatives, programs, and projects.

We need your support. Your input and energy are necessary to create real, sustainable change in the community. We need active, contributing members of the Black community to band together and continue to use their voices to ensure the future of Black Manitobans is solidified.

It is time that we stand together and change the face of our community!
